The New York Knicks faced a tough challenge at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with both teams battling for four intense quarters. In the end, the Knicks narrowly lost by three points. Knicks’ star player Jalen Brunson had a subpar performance, playing nearly 39 minutes. Although he recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 assists, his shooting was horrendous. Defended tightly by Wallace, Brunson shot just 5 out of 18 attempts, struggling to find his rhythm.
In contrast, Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put up an impressive performance in nearly 36 minutes of play, hitting 9 out of 16 shots and sinking 7 out of 7 free throws for a total of 26 points, alongside 3 rebounds and 8 assists. The contrast between the two players was striking, to the point that some fans openly stated, “Tonight, Brunson was just Alexander’s toy!”

Born in 1996 in New Jersey, Brunson hails from a basketball family. His father, Rick Brunson, played in the NBA for nine seasons. Influenced by his father, Brunson began training in basketball at a young age and quickly emerged as a standout. In high school, he was ranked as a 5-star recruit and named Illinois Basketball Player of the Year. By college, Brunson had gained national recognition, helping his team win two NCAA championships in three years.
In 2018, Brunson entered the NBA draft and was selected by the Dallas Mavericks as the 33rd overall pick in the second round. During his rookie season, he averaged 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, showing promise. By his fourth season, his numbers skyrocketed to 16.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game.
It’s worth mentioning that during his time with the Mavericks, Brunson sought a four-year, $55 million contract extension multiple times, but was rejected each time. After a breakout season, the Mavericks offered him a five-year, $87 million deal, which he also turned down. Shortly after, he signed a four-year, $104 million contract with the New York Knicks.
Since joining the Knicks, Brunson has flourished, leading the team to multiple playoff appearances and earning consecutive All-Star selections. He was even hailed by the media and fans as the “best point guard in the East.” However, beneath the accolades, there are concerns. Due to his height and other disadvantages, Brunson’s defensive efficiency has consistently ranked among the lowest in the league.
As for his leadership, although the Knicks have made several playoff appearances, the team has yet to break through despite adding players like Karl-Anthony Towns, Matisse Thybulle, and OG Anunoby to bolster the squad. Much like in tonight’s game against the Thunder, Brunson has yet to prove his ability to lead the team in high-intensity playoff games.
